ABU DHABI // Camels from across the Arabian Peninsula will race next month for prizes that include luxury cars and cash totalling Dh4 million.
The Baynunah Camel Mazayna, which will run from November 16 to 21 in Al Gharbia, will showcase Asayel and Majahim camels going head-to-head in 32 races.
“The competition, which is exclusively open for Emirati camel owners, is an occasion to reveal and celebrate the customs, traditions and heritage activities that have been and are still prevailing in the region,” said Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, adviser for culture and heritage to the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court. The organisers said they were inspired by the success of the renowned Al Dhafra camel competition.
“The love of camels does not only arise from our customs and traditions,” said Nasser Al Awadi Al Menhali, who is sponsoring some of the prizes.
“Camels were mentioned in the holy Quran and the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan has reinforced our love and interest in these creatures.
“And since we always look with love at our heritage through the eyes of our leaders and Rulers, we continue to combine our efforts in the support of cultural events, as an expression of our love and gratitude.”
Saqr Saif Al Muherbi, one of the sponsors of the Baynunah Camel Mazayna, said the event is important in preserving traditions and customs.
“Our contribution to the Baynunah Camel Mazayna comes to confirm our love for camels, which enjoy a special position in the hearts of Emiratis, Gulf people and Arabs in general. Our love mirrors both its environment and culture,” he said.
“I believe that the Baynunah Camel Mazayna is a good occasion to preserve the Emirati customs and traditions and the contributions of ancestors.”
