Burglars used loot to party at hotel, Abu Dhabi court hears

Two men burgled a neighbour's apartment and used the proceeds to check into a hotel and party, hears court.

ABU DHABI // Two men burgled their neighbour’s apartment and used the proceeds to buy drugs, check into a hotel and party, the Criminal Court heard yesterday.

MT and MR, both Emiratis, booked the hotel room using their neighbour’s stolen ID card but were caught after inviting undercover CID officers to join the fun, according to prosecutors.

Both men were charged with burglary and with consuming drugs.

MT’s defence lawyer, Hadeya Al Hammadi, said her client was innocent of the burglary charge, saying witnesses identified only the other man.

She said her client admitted the drug charge, but that for this he should be rehabilitated.

“Society views the drug addict as a victim who needs to be treated and not jailed,” she said.

A verdict was scheduled for November 16.
