British tourist to serve jail time for headbutting two police officers
The man was intoxicated with alcohol at the time of the incident
A British tourist will serve three months in prison for headbutting two police officers after he was arrested in Dubai.
The man, 26, told Dubai Criminal Court at a hearing in June he was so drunk at the time of the incident that he could not recall what happened.
Police were called to Jumeirah Beach Residence at around 3am on May 3 to deal with reports of a drunken man causing disturbance.
“It was clear the man was not in a normal state of mind and when we drew closer we could smell alcohol on him. So after identifying ourselves, we had to take him to Al Barsha police station,” said an Emirati officer, 23.
The defendant did not co-operate with police and had to be handcuffed. As the police patrol arrived at the station, the accused headbutted one of the officers accompanying him as he stepped out of the vehicle and injured his nose.
He then headbutted the second officer before being restrained.
Both officers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The accused admitted consuming alcohol during police questioning but said that he does not recall his actions at the time due to his level of intoxication.
He can appeal the sentence within two weeks.
