AJMAN // Rescuers have recovered the body of a child who drowned off the Corniche.

The body of the 12-year-old boy was discovered after a day of searching.

"The boy drowned on Friday evening and the bad weather on the sea made it difficult for marine rescuers to immediately find his body," Brig Gen Ali Alwan, the director general of Ajman Police, said today.

"A team of police and Civil Defence rescuers had been working together to find the body and, on Saturday, it was recovered."

Brig Saleh Saeed Al Matroushi, the director general of Ajman Civil Defence, said it was the only sea accident in the emirate over the weekend despite rough waters.

Some beachgoers saw a floating object that on closer inspection was identified as a boy, but he was washed away by waves. A member of the public alerted police.

Brig Al Matroushi said the body was taken to a forensic laboratory for further investigation to ensure there was no foul play.

In Umm Al Quwain, a fisherman was rescued at about 2pm on Saturday after falling into the water when a jetty collapsed.

Rescuers were there in five minutes and rushed him to UAQ Hospital. He was in a critical condition, said Maj Ali Obaid bin Fadhel, the director of the city police station.
