DUBAI// German carmaker BMW is recalling almost 7,000 vehicles from the UAE's roads after a fault was discovered that could result in cars failing to start or potentially cause fires.

The issue affects 6,900 BMW 5 and 6 Series models built between 2003 and 2010 and is part of a worldwide recall affecting 1.3 million vehicles.

"The issue involves a cover of the battery cable in the trunk of the car," said Leanne Blanckenberg, corporate communications manager for BMW Group Middle East.

"This battery cable cover can, in some rare cases, be mounted incorrectly.

"This can cause electrical problems, a failure to start the vehicle as well as - in rare cases - fires."

Ms Blanckenberg said BMW had not received any reports and was not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the fault.

The carmaker is contacting owners through its call centres and asking them to take their vehicle to a dealership for testing.

"The checks will include the inspection of the clip-mounted battery cable cover, the replacement of the upper plastic cover and additional sealing," said Ms Blanckenberg.

The free check-up will take no more than 30 minutes, which includes any work to fix the problem if it is discovered.
