A fire spread through a 42-storey building in Sharjah yesterday morning.

The blaze broke out at about 11am and spread quickly from the first to the eleventh floor of the under-construction apartment building on Al Buhairah Corniche. No injuries were reported.

Brig Abdullah Saed, the director general of Sharjah Civil Defence, said yesterday that the fire was brought under control within half an hour, but that it took a while to be completely extinguished.

Three Civil Defence teams took part in the operation, helping to evacuate a number of labourers working on the site.

"The fire only spread to the front parts of the floors and did not spread to the inside where the apartments are," said Brig Saed.

Parts of Al Buhairah Corniche were closed by Civil Defence and Sharjah Police while the clean-up operation took place.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
