Beach extension planned for Hilton Abu Dhabi

The Hilton Abu Dhabi has announced an Dh8 million scheme for land reclamation to increase the size of its beach.

ABU DHABI // The Hilton Abu Dhabi has announced an Dh8 million scheme for land reclamation to increase the size of its beach.

The plan for the Hiltonia Beach Club on the Corniche will see the beach widened by 40 metres to reclaim 1,400 square metres of land in total.

The project will be undertaken in two phases to allow guests access to the beach throughout the construction, which is due to finish in October.

Leanne Smart, the hotel’s marketing communications manager, said utmost efforts would be made to avoid harming the environment.

She said the work involved building an underwater seawall, which will be formed using sand-filled tubes. They have been designed to replicate the natural environment for marine life to inhabit.

“The easiest way to describe it is that it’s almost like a potato sack but filled with sand, instead of building a brick wall or rocky wall.

“The nice thing about this is it actually encourages the development of a coral reef,” Ms Smart said.

In addition, the seawall will make waves break away from the beach to protect it from erosion.

Upon completion, the beach will be 360 metres in length with a supervised play area designated for children.
