DUBAI // A British bank manager was arrested after getting to an argument while waiting for a taxi outside a hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road.

Dubai Court of Misdemeanours was told that A B, 34, was reported to police for creating a disturbance on October 30 this year in front of the Crowne Plaza.

Records stated that A B smelled of alcohol. He was taken to Bur Dubai police station where he was accused of consuming alcohol without a licence.

During interrogation A B, who lives in Abu Dhabi, admitted drinking two glasses of wine and a beer at about 7.30pm that day. He told prosecutors that it was past midnight when he, along with his elderly parents, left the hotel and were waiting for a taxi.

“A taxi arrived, then an argument started between me and another hotel customer over whose right it was to take the cab. The argument escalated and police were called. When they arrived, I was taken to the police station,” said A B, who paid Dh1,000 in bail.

In court A B admitted drinking alcohol and submitted a licence, which the court said was for purchase only, not consumption. The court said it was unclear who issued the licence as it did not name the issuing authority.

The court found A B guilty of the charge and fined him Dh2,000.
