AUS professor dies at his home on Sharjah campus
SHARJAH// A 53-year-old professor at the American University of Sharjah died at his home on campus on Wednesday morning.
American John Swanstrom, a 53-year-old assistant professor in the art and design department, died at his residence, the university confirmed. The cause of death was not disclosed.
“Jack served as an assistant professor in the College of Architecture, Art and Design’s department of design,” said interim provost Kevin Mitchell. “Mr Swanstrom joined AUS in 2002 and dedicated himself to enhancing the reputation of the college and university through the extraordinary number of student awards that resulted from work done in his film courses.
“Jack is survived by his wife Colleen Swanstrom and stepdaughters Olivia and Genevieve Melkonian.”
The university will hold a minute’s silence in the main building rotunda on Thursday to honour Mr Swanstrom’s memory.
His death comes just two days after AUS professor Richard Gassan was killed in a road accident while cycling with a friend.
Dr Gassan, 56, an associate professor of history, was riding with former South African cricketer Desmond Daniel when they were hit and killed by a car close to campus.
The American, who rode his bike to work every day, is believed to have died at the scene. Sharjah Police would not give details about the driver involved.
