Arab Parliament calls for increased aid to refugees
The Arab Parliament is calling on Arab countries and the international community to increase support to Syrian refugees and the countries providing them with shelter.
Ahmed Al Jarwan, speaker of the Arab Parliament and a member of the Federal National Council, made the plea on Wednesday as a parliamentary delegation visited the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan, reported the state news agency Wam.
He praised Jordan’s efforts to support Syrian refugees, and stressed the parliament’s solidarity with the country’s efforts.
He pledged his full support for the Syrian people, appealing to international organisations to provide aid to improve their living conditions.
The United Nations estimates about half a million Syrians have fled to Jordan, with about 120,000 refugees living in the Zaatari camp.
Of about 2.3 million Syrian refugees across the region, thousands lack adequate shelter, living in tents or other makeshift accommodation.
