ABU DHABI // More than 100 Emiratis signed up as candidates in coming FNC elections yesterday, the third day of registration, bringing the total to 322.

Today was the last day for Emiratis to file their candidacy papers for the Federal National Council elections to be held on September 24.

Of the 104 who registered yesterday, 20 were from Abu Dhabi, 30 from Dubai, 20 from Sharjah, 16 from Ras Al Khaimah, inclduding two women, five from Ajman, seven from Umm Al Qaiwain and six from Fujairah.

Registration concludes today and a preliminary list of candidates will be announced on Saturday.

Objections will be considered between August 21 and 23, according to the National Election Committee. The final list will be announced on August 28.

The number of candidates is expected to increase this year from the 456 in the last election as the number of people on the electoral roll, more than 129,000, is almost 20 times greater than in 2006.

To be a candidate for one of the 20 seats up for election, Emiratis must be older than 25 and have a certificate of good conduct.
