American ‘has UAE Embassy documents’ to back up medicinal marijuana claim
DUBAI // A 34-year-old American on Wednesday claimed he was not guilty of a drug charge as the marijuana found in his possession was for medicinal purposes.
At Dubai Criminal Court, C M said: “I’m not guilty, and all the drugs found are marijuana. I have an authenticated document proving that it’s prescribed for me and the documents are signed by the UAE Embassy in Washington.”
Prosecutors said the man was found with 67.41 grams of a herbal substance that was found to be marijuana and hashish.
Records show that the American arrived at Dubai International Airport on December 18 last year to start a job but was arrested at the airport. “The customs officers found drugs in my bag for my personal use,” C M said.
C M told prosecutors that the drug was prescribed for him because he suffered from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
A bail application by the American was rejected, and the court will issue its verdict on April 27.
