Having survived for more than four months without food, two goldfish have been rescued from a building badly damaged in the Christchurch earthquake.
Scooby Doo and Daphne were found swimming in their tank at a firm of accountants in New Zealand when staff were finally allowed to return to the building.
Experts have speculated that they survived by eating algae and bacteria that thrived after the tank's filter system shut down because of lack of power.
However, there was no trace of three other goldfish that shared their aquarium, while a fourth was found dead, floating on the surface.
Not bright
After picking up what she thought was a cigarette lighter in the shape of miniature revolver, a mother accidentally shot and injured her 12-year-old daughter.
Rachel Avilia, 30, told police that she saw the 10cm gun lying on the ground outside her mobile home in Southern California and attempted to light it by pulling the trigger.
On the second attempt, the gun went off, wounding her daughter in the arm. A police spokesman said the incident showed that people "needed to take greater precaution with anything that resembles a gun".
Man lights dog
Scientists in South Korea say they have created a dog that glows in the dark.
After two years of tests at Seoul National University, they claim that a beagle called Tegon will glow green under ultraviolet light if it is fed an antibiotic.
They believe that genetically modified dogs could be used to treat diseases they share with humans like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's because their symptoms could also be made to glow.
Kangaroo wins last fight
While hanging out the washing in her back garden, an elderly woman was knocked to the ground and kicked by a rogue kangaroo.
Police in Queensland, Australia, arrived on the scene to find 94-year-old Phyllis Johnson barricaded in her granny flat after fighting off the animal with a broom. They subdued the kangaroo with a pepper spray and it was later killed. Mrs Johnson was treated for cuts and bruises.
Supercar chain crash
Trying to negotiate heavy traffic around the Place de Casino in Monte Carlo, the female driver of a Bentley Azure managed to hit an Aston Martin Rapide, a Mercedes S Class, a Porsche 911 and a Ferrari F430. The unidentified driver of the Dh1.5 million blue Bentley hit the Mercedes first, setting off a supercar chain reaction of crashes. An initial damage report found that the Aston Martin, Ferrari and Porsche will all need new wings and bumpers, while the Bentley will also need a new door. The cost to insurers is estimated at Dh265,000. The value of the five cars was placed at more than Dh3.6 million.
