DUBAI // Two men took 300 metres of electric cables from a storage site, placed them into the boot of a taxi, and drove away with them, prosecutors said yesterday.
The men, according to records, were arrested after the taxi driver reported them to police. He told prosecutors he grew suspicious of the men when they asked him to do this twice.
The North Korean labourers TM, 40, and KI, 45, were charged at the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance with armed robbery.
Prosecutors told the court the men used screwdrivers, cutters and a saw to steal the cables, which belonged to Danway Electromechanical.
The electric cables were worth Dh100,000, records show, and they were charged with armed robbery because of the tools they were carrying.
"A sting operation was set up with the driver and we waited with him in the same area where he met the passengers before," a Jebel Ali police officer told the court.
Police stepped in and made the arrests after the men were seen hailing the driver and placing the cables into the taxi.
The men denied the charges in court yesterday before Judge Hamad Abdel Latif.
The court will reconvene on January 13 to issue a verdict.
