An airline passenger has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of drug smuggling.
The 39-year-old from Afghanistan was caught by customs officers at Dubai International Airport on July 23 this year.
“His bag looked almost empty and he was looking around as he walked really fast towards the exit,” said an Emirati customs inspector.
“I stopped him and asked for his passport and where he was coming from.”
Dubai Criminal Court heard how an airport body scanner detected multiple foreign objects inside the man’s stomach.
Hospital staff later removed 54 capsules of amphetamine – totalling 362 grams – from his intestine.
The court also ordered the defendant pay a Dh50,000 fine and be deported following his jail term. He has two weeks to appeal the decision.
