ABU DHABI // Adnoc is to open at least 21 new petrol stations and nine vehicle inspection and registration centres this year as part of its plans to keep pace with urban expansion and meet rising demand.

Eleven petrol stations will open in Abu Dhabi city and its suburbs this year, in addition to the Al Jarf station, which opened last month.

Two will open in Al Ain and five in the Western Region, including one that was inaugurated last week on Al Ruwais-Western Region road, The National's Arabic-language sister paper, Al Ittihad, reported on Monday.

Two more will open in Sharjah, the company said, noting that it has plans to build 121 new stations by 2016.

"The opening of the new stations is part of the company's strategic plan to make its services available in all parts of Abu Dhabi and in all its areas of operation, in order to meet customer demand," said Abdullah Salem Al Dhaheri, general manager of Adnoc Distribution.

Over the past two years, the company has opened 31 petrol stations, Mr Al Dhaheri said. A total of 24 of those have been built in Abu Dhabi emirate while four others opened in Sharjah and one each in the emirates of Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah.

Adnoc is also planning to open nine vehicle inspection and registration centres in Abu Dhabi emirate this year - three in the capital and three each in Al Ain and the Western Region.
