Abu Dhabi Municipality has announced it will open the first ladies-only beach in the city's Al Bateen area later this year, according to the Al Ittihad newspaper.

The paper, which is The National's sister Arabic paper, reported in its Saturday edition that the beach will have female lifeguards, and no men will be allowed access.

According to Nahla Al Muhairi, the deputy director of the event section and beaches division at the municipality, more than 95 per cent of the women surveyed in an opinion poll said they preferred to have a ladies-only beach, preferably at Al Bateen.

She said four female guards would be assigned to work at the opening of the beach to deal with emergencies, while the rest of the beach would have female cleaning and organisation personnel.

The ladies' beach, which will span 250 metres, will also have a 300 metre long playfield and a 210 metre swimming area.

There will also be areas designated for children, car parks and water sports.
