Abu Dhabi’s new airport terminal is 86 per cent complete and on course to open by the end of 2019, the airport operator’s chairman said on Sunday.

In March, Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed, deputy chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council, visited the site of the Dh10.8bn Midfield Terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport and said it would open in 2019.

"We have completed 86 per cent of the construction in this project, despite the challenges and difficulties," Awaidhah Al Marrar said, according to Reuters.

The Midfield Terminal will house 65 aircraft gates and cover an area of about 742,000 square metres, which will include 3,500 sq metres of duty free shopping. It is being built by a partnership between Arabtec, the Consolidated Contractors Company of Greece and Turkey’s airports specialist, TAV Group. The contract was awarded in 2012 and was initially due for completion by July 17 this year.

Etihad Airways is based at the airport and is expected to move to the Midfield Terminal.

The terminal is set to increase the airport’s capacity to 45 million passengers a year. The airport handled 24.5m passengers in 2016.
