Transport Undersecretary says the aim is to improve public transport and reduce the number of cars
Abu Dhabi road tolls part of improvements to the capital, Minister says
Road tolls that are to be introduced in Abu Dhabi are part of plans to improve and develop the capital’s transport system, a minister has said.
Khalifa Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Undersecretary at the Department of Transport, said the road pricing scheme would reduce traffic congestion and make journeys faster.
He revealed that the DoT would be examining the best technologies available, as well as examining the costs and timings of the scheme.
The proposed legislation would seek to improve public transport and diminish the reliance on private vehicles, Mr Al Mazrouei said.
Before introducing the tolls, the Department would complete a thorough evaluation that would then be put forward to the Executive Council for approval.
The Minister said the technology would be developed with the Emirate’s Integrated Transport Center, which currently manages the Mawaqif parking system and taxi hire services.
The ITC would develop both electronic systems to manage the movement of vehicles through the tolls and create a payment system for recharging.
