Prosecutors have asked for the death sentence for a man accused of sexually assaulting and murdering an 11-year-old boy on the rooftop of an Abu Dhabi apartment building.

Officials made the request as the Pakistani suspect appeared at Abu Dhabi Criminal Court on Tuesday. The suspect denied the charges.

Athan Janjua, born to a Pakistani father and Russian mother, was found dead in late May. Police said at the time that he was suffocated.

Prosecutors said the man disguised himself as a woman by wearing an abaya and face veil, and led the youngster to the rooftop.

After recording the defendant’s plea, the court adjourned the case until August 23, when the prosecution and defence will present their cases.
