Abu Dhabi police ticket 783 tailgaters

Police ticket 783 drivers for tailgating in a week-long campaign on the emirate's roads, police say.

ABU DHABI // Police ticketed 783 drivers for tailgating in a week-long campaign on the emirate's roads, police said yesterday. The anti-tailgating push, which ended Saturday, was part of Abu Dhabi's road-safety effort. The campaign was launched January 24 to raise awareness of the dangers of driving too closely. Tailgating, according to police, is a major cause of accidents. Lt Col Hamad al Ameri, the head of the traffic investigation section of the Abu Dhabi traffic and patrols department, said 590 of the tailgating fines were issued in Abu Dhabi City. Forty-one were handed out in Al Ain and 47 in Al Gharbia; 105 fines were handed out on external highways.

Most of the fines in the capital, according to Lt Col al Ameri, were issued on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street and Mahawi Street in the direction of Abu Dhabi during peak hours, in the morning and noon. hhassan@thenational.ae
