ABU DHABI // Eighteen women were given awards for outstanding service to society last night to mark International Women's Day. More than 200 men, women and children attended the Dhwani International Women's Day Excellence Awards held at the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The winners were honoured for their contributions in fields including health care, education and social services.
One recipient, Prabha Hari, 37, was awarded for her work as a special educator at a Dubai high school, while Sneha Dutta, 47, received hers for her work in educating adults in the slums of Delhi. Aisha Lakdawala, 39, was recognised for founding the Al Shaheen Library in Abu Dhabi. Many of the 18 award winners were doctors or teachers. "It is important to bring awareness to this generation and the future generations about the importance of women's work in society," said Uma Maheswari, the managing director of Dhwani, an events company.
