15-hour blaze extinguished after UAQ residents kick up a stink

Authorities in Umm Al Qaiwain yesterday used water delivered by lorry to put out a blaze that had burnt at a landfill for more than 15 hours.

People living in the neighbouring Salama area complained to the department of public waste that the fire was causing a bad smell, said Saeed Al Sayyed, the director of waste transportation at the department of public works in UAQ.

Fire- fighters in Ajman also tackled a fire at the home of an Emirati family in the Sawan area on Sunday morning, which destroyed part of the kitchen and sitting room before it was put out.
