Emirati volunteers gear up for the Fifa Under-17 World Cup that will be held later this month.
The spirit of sport
Volunteers play an important role at most major sporting events. The Fifa Under 17 World Cup — which begins in the UAE later this month and where many of the volunteers will be Emiratis — will be no exception.
As The National reported yesterday, 250 Emirati volunteers are gearing up for the event’s opening game on October 17.
“It’s great when you are giving yourself, not for money, but for yourself,” said Jwaher Al Khalifa, who will head a team of 30 volunteers at the tournament.
This is not the first time Emiratis have helped to promote the spirit of sport and connect with spectators from around the world. Previously, the success of such events as the Club World Cup, the Under 20 World Cup, the Beach Soccer World Cup and the annual Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, have been underpinned by the presence of legions of helpers.
Sporting volunteers also fulfil another role, contributing greatly to the economy of a host nation. A study conducted last year noted that 600 volunteers at Yas Marina Circuit for the grand prix produced an effective saving of Dh6.6 million for the event organisers.
