Vidic sees red as Rooney double secures United their first victory

Manchester United get a much-needed Champions League win over Otelul Galati in Bucharest on Tuesday night.

Two second-half penalties from Wayne Rooney were enough to give Manchester United a much-needed Champions League win over Otelul Galati in Bucharest on Tuesday night.

Nemanja Vidic, the United captain, will miss the remainder of United's attempts to qualify from Group C after being sent off for a high tackle on Gabriel Giurgiu.

The hosts also finished a man down when Milan Perendija was red carded for his second bookable offence.

In the group's other match, Benfica remain top after an impressive 2-0 victory away to Basle.

A first-half strike from Bruno Cesar was backed up by a second-half effort from Oscar Cardozo, while Emerson saw red late on for the visitors.

Real Madrid maintained their 100 per cent record in this season's competition with an emphatic victory against Lyon.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring against his former employers, glancing a header from a corner home after 18 minutes.

Sami Khedira doubled the lead two minutes after the restart before Hugo Lloris's blunder in the Lyon goal made it 3-0. Sergio Ramos sealed the rout with a goal nine minutes from time.

The win keeps Jose Mourinho's side top of Group D with a maximum nine points, while Ajax's 1-0 win away at Dynamo Zagreb moved them level on four points with Lyon.

Inter Milan recorded their second win in Group B with a 1-0 success away to French champions Lille.

Giampaolo Pazzini was on target after 21 minutes to secure all three points for the Italians.

Earlier in the evening, CSKA Moscow's 3-0 victory over Trabzonspor demonstrated that they are not to be taken lightly in the group with Seydou Doumbia (2) and Aleksandrs Cauna on target.
