UAE swimmer Yaqoub Al Saadi became the second Emirati athlete to compete at the Rio Olympics when he took part in the 100-metre backstroke.

Al Saadi finished fifth out of seven swimmers in 59.58 seconds, over three seconds off the time of heat winner Merdan Atayev of Turkmenistan.

Al Saadi, 20, is the UAE’s national record holder over 50m and 100m in the backstroke. Al Saadi did not qualify for the next phase as only the fastest 16 swimmers from the heats progress.

Sunday’s other action involving the UAE has Victor Scvortov compete in the 73-kilogram judo competition at 5pm with Scvortov starting in the last 32, where he has been drawn against Yemen’s Zeyad Mater.
