A football academy in Dubai has confirmed that one of its players has signed trainee scholarship forms with English League One side Peterborough United.

Maltese striker Andrea Borg, 16, a student at Gems Wellington school in Dubai, flew to England with his father last week to sign for the English club on a full-time trainee scholarship.

Andrea becomes the third UAE-based player to join a professional English club, following in the footsteps of German goalkeeper Fabian Speiss and South African defender Keiran Geldenhuys, who were signed by Notts County in 2010 and 2012 respectively.

The It’s Just Football academy confirmed the news on its Facebook page alongside images of Andrea signing the forms at Peterborough last week.

“We are delighted and extremely proud to announce that Andrea Borg has signed as a full-time trainee scholar for Peterborough United Football Club in England,” the post said.

“Andrea has been a member of the IJF family since he was nine years of age and it has been an honour to see him grow and develop as a player and a person in these last seven years.

“We are so pleased for Andrea and his family as he starts a career in professional football. We wish you all the best mate.”

Peterborough play in England’s League One, the third tier, and are currently ninth in the standings.
