Andy Murray carried on his excellent form as he claimed his second successive Masters title with a straight sets victory over Gilles Simon in the Madrid final last night. The Scotsman had to work hard to get the better off his French opponent, but eventually won 6-4, 7-6 in a match which lasted 94 minutes. Murray had claimed his first Masters title in Cincinnati in August, and he made it two by capping a fine week of tennis.

He showed no signs of tiredness from defeating world No 2 Roger Federer in Saturday's semi-final as he broke Simon's serve in the fifth game to take control of the final early on. He closed out that set and his serve would remain imperious as he did not have to face a break point in the match. But Simon, who had beaten world No 1 Rafael Nadal in his semi-final, battled hard and forced the second set to go to a tie-break, which Murray won 8-6 to take the title.
