The Swiss dropped the first set but raised his game by a few notches to avenge his loss to the Czech in last year's final.
Federer slips but recovers over Berdych in time for sixth Dubai title
DUBAI // Roger Federer overcame an erratic start to down Tomas Berdych 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 for his sixth Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships title.
Struggling with his serve and forehand in the first set, Federer went down tamely in 33 minutes.
He fought back in the second set to take it 6-4 and then raised his level a few notches higher to cruise through the third set, breaking Berdych’s serve in the fourth game.
Federer’s first win in Dubai was in 2003 when he defeated Jiri Novak in the final. He then won the next two years beating Feliciano Lopez and Ivan Ljubicic respectively.
Rafael Nadal stopped the Swiss from winning his fourth in 2006, but he was back as the champion in 2007, downing Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets.
Federer lost to Novak Djokovic in the 2011 final, but won his fifth title a year later, beating Andy Murray.
For Berdych, this was the second consecutive loss in the final. Last year, after defeating Federer in the semis, he was beaten by Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-3.
