The 27th staging of the ATP Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship is under way in Dubai this week.

Here is a guide to the event, who is playing and what to watch for.

What is the ATP Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships?

It is a 32-man competition, which is part of the men's ATP Tour.

It is an ATP 500 event, with 500 ranking points being awarded to the man who wins the event.

What is the prize money for the winner in Dubai?

The winner of Saturday's men's final will claim a winner's cheque of US$523,330 (over Dh1.9 million) from the $2,887,895 purse.

When is it happening?

The men's tournament began on Monday and the action runs through until Saturday March 2 when the finals of the singles and doubles competitions take place.

The singles action begins at 2pm each afternoon, with evening session matches scheduled to begin from 7pm.

The semi-finals on Friday will begin at 5pm, with Saturday's singles final under way from 7pm.

Roger Federer's return to Dubai

After missing the 2018 competition, the most successful player in the tournament's history is back in Dubai.

The Swiss has won the tournament seven times in the past and a large crowd packed into Centre Crowd on Monday night to see him beat Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round as he began his tilt for title No 8.

He next goes up against Fernando Verdasco for a place in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Kei Nishikori and the rest of the seeds

No 1 seed is Kei Nishikori, who is making his tournament debut and plays his first-round match against Benoit Paire on Tuesday.

Marin Cilic (No 3), Stefanos Tsitsipas (No 5), Borna Coric (No 6) and Daniil Medvedev (No 8) among the other leading seeds.

Seeds Karen Khachanov (No 4) and Milos Raonic (No 7) have already been eliminated after suffering defeats on Monday.

The action is at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, which is based in Garhoud.

The nearest Dubai Metro stop to the location is GGICO, which is around 10 minutes walk from the facility.
