Solid start in the saddle for showjumping hopefuls
The UAE enjoyed a strong day in the individual showjumping at the Al Shaqab Main Arena in Doha yesterday.
All four riders went round the course faultlessly in their two qualifying sessions to secure joint first position in a group including 12 other competitors.
Sheikh Shakhboot Al Nahyan, Sheikha Latifah Al Maktoum, Nadia Taryam and Mohammed Al Owais cleared all the jumps without penalties on their rides, Peanuts De Beaufour, Valentino Valia, Larina 114 and Tolita.
The competition continues today and tomorrow.
However, the UAE narrowly missed out on a medal in the team jumping event, finishing fourth. Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Qatar filled the medal slots.
Better news came from the snooker hall as the UAE defeated Qatar in the team event 3-0 to book their place in the final.
Hanni Al Howri and Salahaldeen Al Rimawi also advanced from the third round of the nine-ball pool doubles, defeating a Kuwaiti team 9-8.
Yousuf Al Hammadi failed to finish in the cycling individual time trial.
In the Paralympic events, Siham Al Rasheedy took third in the women's discus throw F57/58 final with an effort of 25.43 metres, a season's best.
She was fifth in the shot put F57/58 final.
Hamad Al Hammadi was ninth in the men's javelin F57/58 final with a mark of 15.37m.
Mohammed Al Habsi and Rashed Zeyoudi missed out on the medals in the men's shot put F54/55/56 final.
There was gold success late last night as Mohammed Bani Hashem came home first in the 100m T53 final, clocking 16.17 seconds.
Ayed Al Hababi secured the bronze medal with a time of 16.84 seconds.
Jasim Al Naqbi took bronze in the 100m T54 final.
