Eoin Morgan will miss the remainder of England's NatWest Series campaign against India because of a shoulder injury.
The middle-order batsman has suffered a recurrence of an injury to his right shoulder which first affected him during England's Ashes tour last winter.
The Irishman, who captained his adopted country for the first time against his native one in Dublin last month, felt discomfort after the Twenty20 against India at Old Trafford last week.
Nonetheless he played in the first of the five-match series, which resulted in a rain-affected no-result at Chester-le-Street on Saturday.
Nick Peirce, England's chief medical officer, said: "Eoin initially developed discomfort in his right shoulder during the Ashes tour in the winter, and has been managing the injury until now with a conservative programme.
"Unfortunately there has been an acute flare in his pain, which has not responded to treatment."
Morgan did take part in the practice session on Monday to prepare for the second one-day international at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, which also was hampered last night due to rain.
Peirce added: "This is a chronic injury and predominantly affects Eoin's diving and throwing.
"He now requires a progression in his treatment and will undertake further specialist assessment in the next week before a decision on his forthcoming treatment will be determined."
England are not planning to call up a replacement for Morgan, an England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman confirmed.
Morgan's injury has previously affected several cricketers - including Australia's Shane Warne, Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan and India's Virender Sehwag.
India, meanwhile, have recalled Subramaniam Badrinath as cover for Sachin Tendulkar, who was ruled out with a toe injury.
