Robbie Deans re-signs as Wallabies coach until 2013

The New Zealander's contract was to expire at the end of the year, but the Australian Rugby Union instructed John O'Neill to open negotiations with Deans to continue in his role.

SYDNEY // Robbie Deans, the Wallabies coach, has re-signed with the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) for another two years in a deal that will keep him with the national side until 2013.

Deans was initially installed in the role for a four-year term from 2008 which would expire at the end of this year, but the ARU board recently instructed John O'Neill, the managing director, to open negotiations with Deans to continue in his role.

Deans said he was looking forward to continuing with the Wallabies beyond 2011, but was currently focused on more immediate challenges like the Rugby World Cup starting next month in his native New Zealand.

He said he is pleased to have gained the backing of the (ARU) board, adding "a large number of players have recommitted to Australian rugby this year, I'm pleased to be joining them."
