Ramirez hits ground running
Manny Ramirez made a successful start to spring training as he starred in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 4-3 win over a split squad of Texas Rangers in Cactus League action. Ramirez walked twice and singled to help the Dodgers overturn a three-run deficit. Elsewhere, Kendry Morales homered as the Los Angeles Angels used a six-run second inning to hammer the Chicago Cubs 8-2. Morales hit a grand slam and Ryan Budde collected two hits, while Howie Kendrick, Sean Rodriguez, Luis Figueroa and Chris Pettit also drove in runs for the Angels. The rest of the Cubs' squad fared better as they beat another split squad, the Seattle Mariners, 8-1. Sam Fuld and Andres Blanco recorded two hits each while Sean Marshall managed three strikeouts and allowed just three hits and one unearned run in 4 1/3 innings. The other half of the Mariners' squad was also hammered in a 14-6 defeat, while the Rangers also suffered two defeats in one day as the rest of their squad was beaten 4-1 by the Kansas City Royals. The Royals sent part of their squad to Phoenix, where they lost 5-1 to the Milwaukee Brewers. Yovani Gollardo tossed four scoreless innings and Price Fielder fired a three-run homer. In other games the Chicago White Sox toppled the San Diego Padres 15-4, Aaron Laffey pitched four perfect innings as the Cleveland Indians edged to a 4-3 win over the Oakland Athletics, and Andres Torres went 2-for-2 with a home run to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 7-3 win over the Colorado Rockies.
