DUBAI // Al Wasl are expected to announce their first signing of the summer today when they introduce to the media the forward Kaio Felipe Goncalves.

The 25-year-old Brazilian has agreed terms on a transfer from Yokohama FC, a Japanese second-division club, subject to a medical.

Goncalves, known simply as "Kaio", began his career in his homeland with Atletico Paranaense, before spending a season-long loan at Cerezo Osaka, the J-League side. He then moved to Yokohama, initially on a temporary contract.

Kaio will replace Jussie, his compatriot, who departed Wasl after a six-month loan arrangement, and should provide a link between midfield and attack as he operates just behind the main striker.

Although his name will not resonate with many Wasl fans, the club are convinced they have recruited the right man to mark the beginning of what is sure to be a busy summer at the Zabeel Stadium for a club who finished ninth.

"We looked at many players, but decided this is the one to fit our team," said Abdullah Hareb, the chairman. "We expect two or three others to come also."

Wasl, to be coached next season by Laurent Banide, are in the market for another striker to complement Kaio following the departure of Emiliano Alfaro, and the midfielder Achille Emana has returned to Al Ahli despite a successful six-month stint.

Mariano Donda, the Argentine midfielder recovering from a long-term injury, is expected to rejoin the club in the coming season.

Ahmed Ibrahim, the Iraqi defender, was believed to be on his way out of the club, although he could still fill the Asian player spot.
