Man United 1 Man City 2, April 8, 2013

There was little more than pride at stake with United boasting a sizeable advantage at the top of the Premier League. Sergio Aguero’s winner gave bragging rights to City as they triumphed 2-1 in what would be the last derby game for United manager Sir Alex Ferguson before he retired.

City ran riot as they made a statement of intent in what would prove to be a successful title challenge. United collapsed after having Jonny Evans sent off in the 47th minute, trailing 1-0 at the time, and City went on to hit six in all, with Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko scoring two each.

A game best remembered for Wayne Rooney’s superb overhead bicycle kick which won the game for United. Nani had given the league leaders the lead, but David Silva levelled for City midway through the second half. Then Rooney’s acrobatic effort ensured that the three points would go to United.

Three times United took the lead – through Rooney and two goals from Darren Fletcher. But each time City found a response, equalising through Gareth Barry and Craig Bellamy (2). But in the sixth minute of time added on United found a winner as substitute Michael Owen netted.

This was the second leg of the League Cup semi-final, with City 2-1 ahead from the first leg. Goals from Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick had put United in charge, but Carlos Tevez’s strike for City had the game heading for extra time. Rooney struck in stoppage time to win the match.
