Podolski tells Bayern he wants to leave
BERLIN // The Germany striker Lukas Podolski has told Bayern Munich he wants to leave the club during the January transfer window. "I've decided I'd like to leave Bayern in the winter," Podolski told Bild newspaper. "I've told the club management I want to go." Podolski, 23, has not been able to hold down a place in the team since joining from Cologne for ?10 million (Dh46.5m) after winning the award for the best young player at the 2006 World Cup.
He scored four league goals in his first season, five the following season and has managed three so far this term. His form for Germany has continued to be excellent, however, and his record now stands at 31 goals in 60 matches. Despite his poor scoring record at club level, Bayern have repeatedly said that they want him to stay. His chances of playing more regularly will not be helped by the arrival of the US international striker Landon Donovan, who will join the club on a short-term loan deal from January.
