Two people have died following a three-vehicle accident at the Dakar Rally.
A race support vehicle collided head-on with a taxi close to the border between Peru and Chile. A second taxi overturned several times as it attempted to avoid the accident, which happened this morning.
The driver and a passenger in the first taxi were both killed, while the three passengers in the support vehicle were among seven people who were injured and taken to hospitals in Tacna, Peru.
Peruvian authorities have begun an inquiry into the accident, while several of the race's security and paramedic vehicles were deployed to assist local emergency services in the aftermath of the collision.
Stephane Peterhansel had boosted his lead in the race to 10 minutes after teammate Nani Roma won the fifth stage.
Qatari racer Nasser Al-Attiyah, who won the previous two stages, was six minutes behind in seventh in his buggy after a slight navigation error but remained second overall to Peterhansel
