Valentino Rossi will sit on pole position for the Assen TT after edging Dani Pedrosa of Spain.

ASSEN, NETHERLANDS // Valentino Rossi will sit on pole position for the Assen TT after edging Dani Pedrosa of Spain. The Italian, a four-time winner at Assen who also won last time out in Spain, posted a fastest time of one minute, 36.025 seconds today on his Yamaha. Rossi, who will be seeking his 100th Moto GP victory on Saturday, finished 11th in Assen last year. Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner, who are tied with Rossi at the top of the riders' championship standings after six races, start in third and fourth place respectively.

Stoner, the 2008 Assen winner, had time to take one last shot at Rossi's time at the end of qualifying but decided against it. The Australian struggled to find grip on his Ducati and nearly fell on one corner, forcing him to change his rear tyre. *AP
