SACHSENRING, GERMANY // Valentino Rossi held off his Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo in a wheel-to-wheel last lap to win the German Grand Prix. Rossi crossed the line .099 seconds ahead of Lorenzo, after passing the Spaniard with less than two laps remaining. It was Rossi's 101st MotoGP win. Rossi started the race from pole position but lost the lead for 10 laps to Casey Stoner of Australia. The Italian world champion regained the lead with less than 14 of 30 laps left on the Sachsenring circuit, only to see Lorenzo flash by with less than five laps remaining.

Rossi made his move from the inside of a curve and held on to win his fifth German GP. "On this track it's difficult to overtake and I didn't make any mistakes in the final lap," Rossi said. "I went full throttle downhill and braked too deep for Lorenzo to overtake me." Lorenzo said he did not realise they were on the last lap. "I didn't try everything because I thought there were more laps to go," said the Spaniard, who was racing with a broken bone in his foot.

Another Spaniard, Dani Pedrosa, was third on his Honda, 2.899 seconds behind. Stoner finished fourth, 10 seconds back. *AP
