Podium finish for Juniors
Team Abu Dhabi Juniors, Bader Al Jabri and Majed Al Shamsi, last night clinched second and third respectively, in the Rally Poland leg of the Fiesta Sporting Trophy International (FSTi). In round four of the six-event FSTi series, which runs alongside half a dozen European rounds of the World Rally Championship (WRC), the Emirati pair bravely chased runaway leader Patrick Anglade at the head of the seven-strong field.
However, the 21-year old German drove maturely to hold them off, finishing 3mins 51secs ahead of Al Jabri to stretch his series lead. "This is my second finish in three WRC events and it was very fast," said Al Jabri, whose overall position among all WRC cars in Poland was 26th. "I was worried about the loose mud because it gets very slippery, but it was surprisingly dry after the rain during the night. I had a few problems in the last two stages when I broke my suspension and I lost a lot of time because I had to slow my pace but I'm pleased with my podium."
Following his puncture on Saturday, which cost him over three minutes, Al Shamsi pursued his Abu Dhabi Junior teammate right to the finish line, with the pair separated by a meagre 1.7secs. "It was a very nice rally, the stages were very smooth but often they picked up a lot of dirt in the re-runs," he said. Looking ahead to the next round in Finland, Al Shamsi said: "Finland will be more technical, with more crests and jumps - you really have to know the lines; I can't wait."
The team's third driver, Ahmed Al Mansoori, finished fifth. The Abu Dhabi Juniors' mentor, BP Ford Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi, congratulated his proteges: "A fantastic performance by the boys. "They've listened to the strategy and followed it perfectly," he said. "All weekend they've driven well and gained valuable experience." firstname.lastname@example.org
