Max Verstappen, Lionel Messi and Collin Morikawa – 25 of the best sporting images of the week

We pick out some of the most stunning pictures from the last seven days

There was a surprise to start the week in Formula One when the dominance of Mercedes was brought to a stunning halt.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen took the chequered flag in the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix ahead of reigning champion Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone on Sunday.

Mercedes had been expected to seal their fifth win from as many races this season.

It has been Champions League time in football, where some of the sport's biggest names encountered mixed fortunes.

On Friday, Cristiano Ronaldo saw his dreams of winning a sixth European Cup dashed, despite the Portuguese scoring twice for Juventus in the 2-1 last-16 in the second leg against Lyon.

Memphis Depay's 12th-minute penalty sealed Lyon's place in the quarter-finals with a 2-2 aggregate score to go through on away goals where they will face Manchester City.

Ronaldo's old nemesis Lionel Messi had no such problems a day later as his Barcelona side secured a 3-1 win against Napoli at Camp Nou and a 4-2 victory on aggregate. German champions Bayern Munich are next up for Messi and Co.

Fast forward four days and Messi's former Barca teammate Neymar helped Paris Saint-Germain overcome Atalanta with two last-gasp goals from Marquinhos and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, clinching the French side's semi-final spot.

On the golf course, the American Collin Morikawa claimed his first major title after winning the PGA Championship at an empty Harding Park.
