Alesi steps up title chase

Jean Alesi scored his second victory of the weekend in yesterday's Speedcar Series meeting at the Dubai Autodrome.

DUBAI // Jean Alesi scored his second victory of the weekend in yesterday's Speedcar Series meeting at the Dubai Autodrome. After a narrow win on Friday, the Frenchman yesterday cut through the field from eighth on the grid to win by four seconds from fellow former Formula One drivers Gianni Morbidelli in second and Johnny Herbert in third. With two races left, Alesi he was optimistic he could win the title with just nine points separating him with the leader Morbidelli. "I am in a good position now," said the 44-year-old ex-Ferrari and Benetton driver. "I had a very good car from Friday. I gave good information to the engineer and he found the problem I was having - I had some wheelspin on fast laps." To maximise overtaking opportunities, the first eight finishers from Friday's race began yesterday's round in reverse order. Alesi was not deterred by the midfield start this landed him with, as he took the lead two-thirds of the way through the 24-lap race. * PA Sport
