Sheikh Mohammed has appointed John O’Shea as the new trainer for his Darley Australia operation, according to the Australian Associated Press (AAP).

O’Shea was in line for the job working for the Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai since Peter Snowden announced his plans to step down after the 2014 Sydney autumn carnival.

Darley’s stable in Sydney will be run by O’Shea while a foreman will run the Melbourne operation.

O’Shea has been a trainer since 1999 and has had 18 Group 1 winners. He recently travelled to Dubai to meet Sheikh Mohammed.

“Sheikh Mohammed recently met John O’Shea in Dubai and John was able to appreciate that he will be working for a horseman with a thorough understanding of the thoroughbred business,” Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock adviser John Ferguson told the AAP.

“Sheikh Mohammed confirmed that following Peter Snowden’s decision to move on from Darley next year, his horses will continue to be in good hands.”

O’Shea spoke of the honour to be handed the reins at Darley Australia.

“The opportunity to work with Darley gives me the chance to move to a new level,” he said.

“It is the most coveted training position in Australia if not the world. It is an honour to be considered let alone to be given the position.”
