The AL East leading New York Yankees went down 6-4 to Oakland Athletics to end an eight-game winning run.

The Detroit Tigers edged out the Chicago White Sox 4-3 thanks to Carlos Guillen's RBI single in the 10th inning. Edwin Jackson also struck out three in seven innings as AL Central-leading Detroit notched their third straight win. An RBI double in the 12th from Jason Bartlett was the decider as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-9. Toronto had been 8-0 ahead after four innings but a four-run seventh sparked the comeback from the Rays.
David Ortiz blasted a three-run home run as the Boston Red Sox posted a 7-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles, while Asdrubal Cabrera hit a home run and had two RBIs for the Cleveland Indians as they beat the Seattle Mariners 10-3. Jeremy Sowers also pitched seven scoreless innings as the Indians scored their third straight win. Luke Hochevar struck out 13 in seven innings to help the Kansas City Royals to a 6-3 victory over the Texas Rangers.
