The New York Rangers turned the tables on the Philadelphia Flyers with a 2-1 victory at home - but it came at the price of goal-scoring captain Ryan Callahan, who suffered a shoulder injury.

The Rangers, beaten by the same score by the Flyers on Thursday, lost Callahan early in the third period when he was injured during a tussle with Philadelphia's Maxime Talbot.

Callahan skated straight off the ice and did not return. The injury would be evaluated later today, the team said.

"We were holding each other up and his shoulder popped out or something," Talbot said after the match.

"It was unfortunate. I let him go. I kind of felt it, but then I saw his face as well."

After trailing 2-0 by the second period, the Flyers pegged back a goal in the third through Kimmo Timonen, who converted a power-play.

But the visitors could not find an equaliser as New York killed off a pair of power-plays and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 26 saves.

"It was really big," said Rangers coach John Tortorella of his team's defensive effort. "We've been on the other end of it, not scoring (on power-plays). It's an important part of the game."

New York had built an early cushion courtesy of Michael Del Zotto who scored in the first period, then assisted on Callahan's goal in the second to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

Logan Couture equalised with less than three minutes of regulation to play, then Michal Handzus scored the only goal of the shoot-out as the San Jose Sharks made it six wins out of six by beating the Anaheim Ducks 3-2.

Joe Pavelski put San Jose ahead in the first period, but Francois Beauchemin and Matt Beleskey scored in the second to turn the game around.

Couture scored with 2:45 left to play in the third, then Handzus struck in the shoot-out to ensure the Sharks kept rolling.

Nathan Horton scored with just over four minutes to play to take the game into overtime and the Boston Bruins beat the New Jersey Devils 2-1 after a shoot-out to maintain their strong start to the season.

David Clarkson put the Devils ahead in the second period, but Horton intervened just as it looked like the Bruins would suffer their first loss in regulation this year.

Brad Marchand then scored what proved to be the decisive shoot-out goal and the Eastern Conference leaders improved their record to 5-0-1.

The Rangers' New York neighbours, the Islanders, also won, with Matt Moulson registering a goal and an assist in a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Detroit Red Wings beat the Dallas Stars by the same score line, with Valtteri Filppula netting twice.

The Tampa Bay Lightning continued their good start to the year as they beat the Florida Panthers 5-2 for their fifth win in six games.

Matt Frantin scored two, including a last-gasp winner in overtime, as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-3.

The Montreal Candiens were also 4-3 winners, against the Winnipeg Jets, the Ottawa Senators saw off the Washington Capitals 3-2 and the Minnesota Wild got their first win in four with a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
