Kevin Nolan scored a hat trick and Shola Amoebi netted twice Sunday as Newcastle routed 10-man Sunderland 5-1 in the northeast Premier League derby.
Nolan sent the hosts on their way with a 24th-minute opener, doubled the lead eight minutes later and rounded the thrashing off with a close-range effort in the 75th.
Sandwiched between Nolan's final two strikes was a brace from striker Amoebi – one coming from the penalty spot – as Sunderland's defense imploded.
Hopes of a comeback by the visitors disappeared in the 53rd when Titus Bramble was dismissed for a professional foul on Andy Carroll, with Darren Bent's last-minute goal simply a consolation.
The win lifted Newcastle above its rival in the Premier League table.

Villa, Birmingham share spoils
Aston Villa and Birmingham failed to find a cutting edge as a dull Midlands derby ended in a 0-0 draw at Villa Park.
Birmingham started the better of the two sides, with Keith Fahey forcing Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel into a couple of routine saves, but the match only livened up in the final 20 minutes when the hosts found some attacking rhythm.
Substitute Barry Bannan and holding midfielder Ciaran Clark went close before Villa winger Ashley Young smashed a rising shot into the woodwork in the final minute.
The draw left both sides in midtable, with Villa on 12 points – one more than its rival after 10 matches. Villa has now won just once since August.
