New Dubai MMA event looks to build on growth of sport in UAE

Organisers of the Global Fighting Championship 1 event, which is being held in Dubai today, are confident that they can capture the growing interest in mixed martial arts.

Fighters from countries including the UAE, Iran, Brazil, Philippines and Poland are to take part in the event, with 11 bouts scheduled to take place.

Dr Ahmed Al Sharif, the general secretary of the Dubai Sports Council, said: "All over the world martial arts have shown a huge ascendancy on popularity and we feel that this is the best time to cash in on its growing status in Dubai and the region.

"The Middle East in particular has a vast following in mixed martial arts with many youngsters engaged in training, and we at the Dubai Sports Council have always been encouraging such activities that bring out the best in our youths."

The event is being held in Hall No 8 at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
