Brazilian striker Douglas has become Al Ain’s latest recruit, signed from Japan’s Tokushima Vortis. He was introduced to the media on Tuesday at the Arabian Gulf League champions’ Khalifa International Stadium.
Japan hotshot
Douglas, 28, hit the headlines last year on loan at Sanfrecce Hiroshima, scoring 21 times in the league to fire his club to the J-League title. He was the division’s second top scorer. Douglas has signed a two-and-a-half year contract at Al Ain, rejecting offers from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the Chinese Super League and another club in the UAE.
On the transfer
“First I’d like to thank Al Ain, to everyone that gave their effort to complete this transfer. I had different options but I chose this club. In this short time since we decided to come I managed to seek all possible information about the club and also the players, so I know I can adapt to this team.”
On the Arabian Gulf League
“This is my first time playing in an Arab league. I know that it’s a very competitive league with very good players so it’s not going to be easy. I’m confident I’m well prepared and with the help of the other players and the team I’m pretty sure I can achieve all our objectives. I want to have one more title at the end of the season and I hope to win all the games.”
On replacing Gyan
“I know it’s a challenge, but I’m willing to show what I’m capable of and willing to struggle and fight to score goals. I hope the fans will remember my name and I’ll make them happy. I hope to pay back all the support the fans are giving me and to play well and get many victories. One more time, thank you to everybody.”
Coach’s delight
“We need a striker who will score 15-20 goals,” the Al Ain coach, Zlatko Dalic, said. “This is our target. We play passing football, but missed a lethal striker. We have local players who can do anything, give fantastic passes, so we needed this guy. Of course, he will need time to adapt to everything, but I hope it will be very soon. I’m sure it’s the right choice from our side. I can guarantee we did a great job.”
