ABU DHABI // The U17 World Cup kicked off to the samba tune on Thursday at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium.

Brazil, the three-time winners of the age-group championship, whipped debutants Slovakia 6-1 to get their campaign off to an impressive start in Group A.

Mosquito led the scoring with hat trick while Nathan (two) and Caio (one) got in to the scoresheet as Brazil sent a chilling warning to their rivals – the UAE and Honduras.

Slovakia scored a consolation goal through Denis Vavros, who tapped in a rebound when Jakub Hromada’s effort was blocked by Marcos, the Brazilian goalkeeper.

Mosquito and Nathan, the Atletico Paranaense teammates, combined superbly in attack to score thrice between them at half time to set the platform for their team.

Nathan worked down the left flank, moved deep down the near post before slipping a low pass to Mosquito, who dabbed the ball between the Slovak keeper Martin Junas to put Brazil ahead.

Nathan was brought down by Junas and Mosquito stepped forward to double the lead just past the half hour.

Mosquito setup Nathan with a well-timed pass for him to strike powerfully from the top of the goalmouth to make it 3-0 to establish Brazil’s dominance for the rest of the game.

The closest the Slovakia came to test the Brazilian goal in the first half was a dipping 30-yard shot from Hromada, the captain, which was expertly pushed out by a diving keeper Marcos.

Nathan extended the lead two minutes after the break when he tapped in a left cross from Abner and Caio completed the rout with a stinging shot from just inside the box.

Uruguay blanks New Zealand, 7-0

Uruguay got their campaign off to a perfect start by thrashing New Zealand 7-0 on Thursday.

Kevin Mendez opened the scoring after three minutes, before Leandro Otormin and Franco Acosta both grabbed two.

Facundo Ospitaleche scored the sixth and Franco Pizzichillo rounded off the rout in the final minute.
